Hello, at the end of June I had posted information about the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship, so I wanted to post more information on other states’ sheriffs’ association scholarships. These scholarships are for students seeking law enforcement degrees, so criminal justice degree students are eligible for these criminal justice scholarships.

The eligibility requirements for these scholarships are similar. The applicant must be a resident of the state of their sheriff’s association, attending a university/college in the same state, and must be a full-time student. The applicants need to submit completed applications to the sheriff of the county of the applicant’s permanent resident in that state.

Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship – Information can be found on this page: http://www.learninglaw.com/minnesota-sheriffs%E2%80%99-association-scholarship/. In this link you’ll find information about the scholarship and the url for the application.

Illinois Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship – Information can be found here: http://www.ilsheriff.org/youth_programs__0.aspx. This past year’s application can be viewed at here: http://www.kankakeecountysheriff.com/pdf/ISA%20Complete%20Scholarship%20Internet%20Packet%202011.pdf.

Texas Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship: Information can be found here: http://www.txsheriffs.org/scholarship/youth.htm. The application can be found here: http://www.txsheriffs.org/pdfs/youth_scholarship.pdf.

Hello everybody, here is a great scholarship program offered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for criminal justice degree students who have an interest in STEM fields too (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This criminal justice scholarship program is an excellent way to pay for your education and get a foot in the door into the DHS. This is a highly competitive scholarship, but the program is excellent.

The scholarship program is for 2 years including a 10 week internship during the summer. The program pays for the student’s tuition and mandatory fees. The student will also receive a stipend of $1000 per month for nine months. The stipend helps the student to only worry about their studies and not on other things that come up. The student will also receive $5000 for the 10 week internship.

To eligible for this award, students’ need to be US citizens, must be majoring in a DHS STEM field (but can have criminal justice as a dual major) with relevance to homeland security research areas. Those areas can be found in the link to the scholarship information site that is posted below. Students’ must have a GPA of 3.30 or better on a 4.0 scale. The applicant must not be graduating before the 2 year commitment is up or the student will be ineligible.

The program does have other requirements beyond maintaining a minimum GPA level, enrollment status, and satisfactory progress towards a degree, the student must complete the 10 week internship and is required to complete a one year service commitment at an approved DHS-STEM venue. The one year service is required within two years of the final stipend payment.

Applicants must start the application process at the DHS program website. They will have to answer several questions to determine their eligibility. If the applicant is eligible then they will be able to begin the application process. The applicant will be judged on academic record, reference reports, SAT or ACT test scores, and 3 essays: research experience, current research interests, and homeland security service.

Expect the due dates to be early January 2012. Applicants should keep checking the website to see when the application is up.

Go to this site for more information and application starting point: http://www.orau.gov/dhsed/newpages/scholarship.html

Review this site to see a sample application: http://www.orau.gov/dhsed/newpages/ScholarsApplic2011.pdf

Good Luck!

Here is information about another scholarship opportunity for students seeking criminal justice degrees. The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) offers 4 different scholarships to high school seniors. RMHC “creates, finds and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children.” Most of these programs are provided within the communities of the children. Education costs are continuing to increase which results in a college education being beyond the financial reach of many outstanding students; therefore, RMHC has partnered with its local Chapters to offer scholarships to graduating high school seniors who need extra financial assistance. The RMHC scholarship program seeks students who are outstanding role models in their communities and desire to fulfill their educational goals.

To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must be high school seniors, be a US citizen, be younger than 21 years old, live in a RMHC chapter area, be accepted into a 2 or 4 year educational institution, and completely fill out the scholarship application.

Most scholarships are around $1000 but can vary from chapter to chapter.

The due date to apply for the scholarship is January 27, 2012. Applicants will be notified of their status around May – June 2012.

Students can get more information and the application for the scholarship from the following sites:
Chapter locator: http://rmhc.org/assets/RMHC-Scholarship-PDFs/2010-2011-County-list-doc.pdf
Online application: https://aim.applyists.net/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2frmhc
The Information site has links to hard copies of the applications.

Hello everyone, here is another great criminal justice scholarship opportunity for students. The Lint Center for National Security Studies, Inc. is also offering the Army Staff Sgt. Richard S. Eaton Jr. Scholarship to students who are seeking a criminal justice degree and want to pursue a career in Alliance Building, Counterintelligence, Cultural Understanding, and National Security. The Lint Center will award a $1000 scholarship that can be used for tuition and other educational costs.

The only eligibility requirement is the applicant must be admitted to a university before applying for the scholarship. There are several documents a student must submit to apply for the scholarship. Students must submit a completed application, a photograph, current resume, proof of acceptance and enrollment at a 4-year university, academic transcripts, copies of special academic awards, and 2 letters of recommendation (from a teacher, supervisor, or community leader).

Additionally, applicants must submit 2 essays: one on Counterintelligence and National Security and the other is a Personal essay. The Counterintelligence and National Security essay should be 600-800 words and explain one of the goals or concepts of the Lint Center. The application gives a good description of what the scholarship committee is looking for, but they are looking for ground-breaking innovating ideas. The Personal essay should be one page, and discuss why you are right for the scholarship. The scholarship committee wants to understand you, your goals, your thoughts, and get a general feeling of who you are. At the end of both essays the student must input the following “I (request/do not request) this essay to be published on the Lint Center for National Security Studies, Inc website (with/without) my name published.”

All documents, including the completed application, must be scanned into a PDF format and emailed to Scholarship@LintCenter.org. The due date is January 31, 2012; any applications received after January 31, 2012 will be considered for the following year.

You can get more information by emailing Info@LintCenter.org or going to this site, http://www.lintcenter.org/2009/Eaton.htm.

The application can be found at http://www.lintcenter.org/LintCenter-SchForm-01.doc.

Good luck and I’m sorry I didn’t find this sooner, but keep this great criminal justice scholarship opportunity in mind when applying for scholarships next year.

Here is a great scholarship for high school seniors that are pursuing criminal justice degrees and other degrees. This is not just a criminal justice scholarship, so any high school senior can apply. Comcast wants students reach their goals, maximize their potential, and be a leader in school and the community. Comcast also knows that every little bit of money can greatly help a student, so they offer these $1000 one-time scholarships to high school seniors whose school is in a community served by Comcast.

Students need to be nominated by their high school Principal or Guidance Counselor. The student must also be a full-time high school senior, have a GPA of at least 2.8, and “demonstrate a strong commitment to community service and display leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience.”

The scholarship can be used towards tuition and other expenses, and there is no set number of scholarships awarded.

Students are encouraged to ask their Principal or Guidance Counselor to nominate them. Have your Principal or Guidance Counselor email comcast@applyists.com to get the scholarship application and nomination form, and to verify their school’s eligibility.

This is a great opportunity to get some additional money for non-tuition expenses like books, meal cards, other study materials, tutoring, transportation (like bus passes, parking passes, etc.), and/or other fees. Students should try to get as much funding as possible to limit the amount of school loans they would need. Good luck.

Hello, here is some great information for students who are involved in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA – http://www.bgca.org/Pages/index.aspx). As I was looking for another criminal justice scholarship to provide information about, I came across a scholarship that some students won from the BGCA chapter in their area. I was trying to find more information about that specific scholarship, but I couldn’t find exact details or an application; however, I found information on other scholarships offered by other BGCA chapters. So I wanted to share the names of the scholarships so that students can see examples of local chapter scholarships, and then can check with their local chapter for information on other scholarships.

The first scholarship I came upon is the Darden Restaurant Foundation’s Darden “Recipe for Success” Scholarship offered through the BGCA. This past year there were 68 winners and each were given a $3,000 scholarship. Also, there is a National Youth of the Year that will receive up to $87,000 in scholarships. This looks like a great opportunity, so students should definitely seek our more information from the local BGCA chapter.

The next scholarships are scholarships offered to local area students by the BGCA chapter in that area. In Trenton, NJ, the BGC of Trenton and PNC Bank awarded 2 scholarships to 2 local students to attend Mercer County Community College. The scholarship covers full tuition, expenses, and transportation costs. In Orangeburg, SC, the Orangeburg area BGC has started the Thomas Bruce Ecklund Foundation Scholarship for students who want to attend Claflin University, South Carolina State University or Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. The last scholarship information I found is from the Truckee Meadows BGC in the Northern Nevada area. They offer three different scholarships to the students at any of their 20 chapters: Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows Scholarship – $500 per semester up to 10 semesters, Doris Pearce Memorial Scholarship – $500 per semester up to 10 semesters, and the Hot August Nights Foundation Scholarship – $500 per semester up to eight semesters.

All information about any scholarships can be found from the BGCA or local chapters. Students can find local chapters from this link: http://www.bgca.org/whoweare/Pages/FindaClub.aspx.

I hope this information helps you criminal justice degree students who are looking for different types of criminal justice scholarships. Good luck.
